Why We Run the Waterfront

The Hudson at 6am looks different when you're moving through it.

June 2026

There is a version of the waterfront path that belongs to tourists. Strollers, food carts, selfies at the railing with the skyline behind. That version exists from about 10am until dusk, and it has nothing to do with us.

The version we run belongs to 6am. The light is still low and doing interesting things on the water. The PATH riders are just starting to move. A few other runners — you can tell the regulars by how they don't make eye contact, not out of rudeness, but because everyone understands this is time for the head to settle.

The Case for Repetition

People ask why we run the same stretch over and over. Newport, Exchange Place, Liberty State Park turnoff, back. Five kilometers. Flat. Boring, they say, if they haven't tried it.

Repetition is underrated. When the route doesn't require your full attention, your legs can do the work without the head getting in the way. You notice different things each time — the way the light changes by season, the new restaurant being built out, the same man walking his small dog who has been walking his small dog at 6:15am every day for as long as anyone can remember.

We return to the waterfront because it is ours in a particular way. Not owned — shared, but on terms we've established through consistency. Show up enough times and a place starts to feel like yours.

What the City Gives You

Running in a city is different from running a trail or a track. The terrain is variable in ways that aren't always obvious — curb cuts, grates, the slight camber of a road draining toward the gutter. Your foot is never landing on the same surface twice.

Jersey City adds elevation to the mix. You can run flat along the water, or you can go up — and going up changes everything. The Heights is a different city. The air is different. The view from the top of Palisade Ave, looking back across toward Manhattan, is the kind of thing you stop taking for granted after about the third time you've earned it with your legs.

That's what the waterfront run sets up for. It's the base. The recovery. The place where the week gets processed. We go back to it because we always come back from it ready for more.
